Aesthetic: Naturalistic, movement, seasonal bloom succession
The Tough Love Garden is a fire-smart, low-water planting system designed for resilience in exposed and arid conditions and focusing on year-round structure, sculptural planting form and high-clarity spatial design.
Built from drought-adapted native species, it prioritizes resilience, structure, and long-term ecological stability.
This ecotype combines Dry Shrub-Steppe and Rock Garden systems, prioritizing drought tolerance, structural clarity and ecological stability.
25 key species are included in the planting plan such as: Arctostaphylos uva-ursi and A. columbiana, Eriogonum umbellatum, Pseudoroegneria spicata, Penstemon fruticosus, Sedum lanceolatum and S. spathulifolium and dwarf forms of Pinus contorta and Juniperus communis var. montana to create a layered composition of texture and massing.
These plants are adapted to heat, wind and nutrient-poor soils, forming stable ground-cover and structural planting zones that reduce irrigation dependency.
The Tough Love Garden system prioritizes structure over seasonality. It combines Alpine/Subalpine and Rock Garden systems, emphasizing evergreen persistence and architectural silhouette designed for year-round clarity.
This is not seasonal planting — it is structural landscape design. Ideal for modern estates, it provides winter presence, spatial definition and long-term form stability.
Landscape as architecture.
